Claude Artifacts vs ChatGPT Canvas: What Changed in 2026
Claude artifacts and ChatGPT canvas compared: what each was built for, how editing, code and sharing work, why OpenAI moved away from canvas in 2026, and what to use in ChatGPT and Claude today.
For two years, the standard comparison was simple: Claude had artifacts, ChatGPT had canvas, and both moved long answers out of the chat and into a panel you could work in. In 2026 that comparison changed. Anthropic expanded artifacts into templates for docs, slides, designs and dashboards. OpenAI took canvas out of its current models and replaced it with writing blocks, ChatGPT Sites and ChatGPT Slides.
This article explains what each one was built for, how they differ, and what to use in each assistant today. Every fact comes from Anthropic's and OpenAI's own documentation and release notes, linked under Sources.
Key takeaways
- Canvas was a writing and coding editor: you and ChatGPT edited the same text or code side by side.
- Claude artifacts are finished, standalone outputs: documents, decks, designs, dashboards and small apps that can be shared and reused.
- Since May 28, 2026, canvas is not available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and code appear in blocks within the chat, and paid users can reach canvas through legacy models only until those are retired.
- In ChatGPT today, ChatGPT Sites covers interactive pages and apps, and ChatGPT Slides covers presentations. In Claude, artifacts cover both.
What ChatGPT canvas was built for
OpenAI introduced canvas on October 3, 2024 as "a new interface for working with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects that go beyond simple chat." It opened in a separate window beside the conversation, and OpenAI described the goal as working together "not just through conversation."
In canvas you could:
- Edit directly. Change any text or code yourself, or highlight a passage and ask ChatGPT about that part only.
- Use shortcuts. Ask ChatGPT to adjust the length of a piece of writing, debug code and perform other common actions from a menu.
- Go back. Restore earlier versions with the back button.
- Run Python. Later updates added running Python code inside canvas, with ChatGPT offering fixes for errors.
- Share. A later update let people share a canvas, "such as rendered React/HTML code, document, or code," the way they share a conversation.
Canvas opened automatically when ChatGPT judged it useful, or on request.
What happened to canvas in 2026
On May 28, 2026, OpenAI's release notes announced an update to GPT-5.5 Instant and added: "With this update, canvas will no longer be available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and coding functionality is now supported directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks. Paid users can continue using canvas for a limited time through legacy models until those models are sunset."
Three later releases filled the gap:
- June 8, 2026, writing blocks for long documents. Longer writing opens in a full-screen editor with a table of contents, can be downloaded, and can be saved to the Library to edit later.
- July 9, 2026, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT Sites. Work is an agent for longer tasks that creates "finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites." Sites, in public beta, turns a request into an interactive website or lightweight app.
- October 16, 2026, ChatGPT Slides. Presentations that teammates edit together in real time, with shared comments and export to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides.
What Claude artifacts are in 2026
Anthropic defines an artifact as "anything Claude makes for you that you'd put in front of someone: a design, a deck, a document, a dashboard, or a small interactive tool." Claude creates one when the content is substantial and self-contained, "typically over 15 lines," and likely to be edited, reused or referred back to.
Artifacts are available on every Claude plan, including Free, and now come with templates:
- Docs, written with Claude and your team in real time, exported to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.
- Slides, edited directly and exported to PowerPoint or PDF, or sent to Google Slides.
- Design, for mockups, prototypes and landing pages that follow your design system.
- Dashboards (beta) and Motion (beta), for charts from connected data and for animated explainers.
An artifact can also call Claude itself, which turns it into a small app. People using it sign in with their own Claude account, and their usage counts against their own plan rather than yours.
Side-by-side comparison
| ChatGPT canvas | Claude artifacts | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Writing and editing text or code together with ChatGPT | Finished outputs you share and reuse |
| What it holds | A document or a code file | Documents, decks, designs, dashboards, diagrams, images, single-page sites and small apps |
| Editing by you | Directly in the text or code | Directly in template artifacts (docs, slides, designs); otherwise by asking Claude |
| Targeted edits | Highlight a passage and ask | Highlight text and choose Edit with Claude |
| Running code | Python inside canvas | Interactive pages and apps run in the artifact |
| Sharing | Like a conversation | By plan: a link, email invitations (beta), your organization or groups |
| Status in 2026 | Not available in GPT-5.5 Instant or Thinking; legacy models only, for a limited time | Expanded with templates for Docs, Slides, Design, Dashboards and Motion |
Claude artifacts vs ChatGPT today
Because canvas is going away, the more useful comparison now is between Claude artifacts and the ChatGPT features that replaced it.
| Need | In Claude | In ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| A long document | A Docs artifact | A full-screen writing block saved to the Library |
| A presentation | A Slides artifact | ChatGPT Slides (Pro, Business, Enterprise with Space access) |
| An interactive page or small app | An artifact, or an artifact that calls Claude | ChatGPT Sites (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) |
| A public link | Free, Pro and Max can publish legacy chat artifacts; Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise can share by link (Team and Enterprise when an Owner allows it) | Sites can be published to anyone on the internet where public publishing is enabled |
| On your own website | Legacy published artifacts offer an embed code | Sites can use a custom domain you own |
Two differences matter most in practice:
- Who can open a share. Anthropic's sharing article says that everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared artifact, "even with the link," except legacy artifacts published from a chat. ChatGPT Sites can be shared with anyone on the internet where public publishing is enabled, and with named outside viewers who sign in to ChatGPT.
- What a page can store. A Claude artifact can keep up to 20 MB of text per artifact, and a Claude Code artifact is "one self-contained page with no backend." A ChatGPT Site can have a database of up to 10 GB, secrets and a custom domain, so it behaves more like a small hosted application.
Which one should you use?
Use Claude artifacts if you work in Claude and want documents, decks, designs or small tools that your colleagues open with their own Claude accounts, or apps that run on each person's own Claude usage.
Use ChatGPT Sites and Slides if you work in ChatGPT, need a hosted page with a database or your own domain, or want decks your team edits together in Space.
If the work comes from coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex and a team keeps editing it, neither assistant's panel is the natural home. That is the case a shared agent workspace covers; see Claude artifacts vs Artifacts for how one compares.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT canvas discontinued?
It is no longer available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking, according to OpenAI's May 28, 2026 release notes. Paid users can still use it through legacy models "for a limited time" until those models are retired.
What replaced canvas in ChatGPT?
Writing blocks and code blocks inside chat responses, with a full-screen editor for long writing. For pages and apps, ChatGPT Sites; for presentations, ChatGPT Slides.
Is Claude artifacts or ChatGPT better for coding?
They solve different problems. Canvas was an editor for code you were writing with ChatGPT. Claude artifacts render code as a working page or app. For changes to a real codebase, both companies offer coding agents, Claude Code and Codex; see Claude Code vs Codex.
Do Claude artifacts work on the free plan?
Yes. Creating artifacts and the Docs, Slides and Design templates are available on Free. Sharing by link, connecting apps and storing data need a paid plan.
