Claude Code and Notion: Notion MCP vs Artifacts for Agent Work
What Claude Code and Codex can do in Notion through Notion MCP (pages, databases, comments, suggested edits), how Notion shares and exports that work, and how it compares with Artifacts, a workspace agents publish spreadsheets, documents and slides to.
Notion is one of the few workspaces that names coding agents in its own documentation. Notion MCP, a server Notion hosts, lets "an MCP client, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex" read and update the pages you can access. The agent can create pages and databases, comment and suggest edits. Notion's content is pages and databases, and it exports as PDF, HTML, Markdown and CSV.
Artifacts suits a different kind of output. Agents publish spreadsheets, slides, dashboards, forms and other files to a shared space. The team edits and comments on them, and the agent answers. Those files download as .xlsx, Word and PowerPoint.
Key takeaways
- Notion MCP is hosted by Notion and connects with OAuth. Its tools let an agent search, create and update pages and databases, comment and suggest edits.
- Notion organizes work as pages and databases. Its exports are PDF, HTML, and Markdown with CSV for databases.
- Notion guests need their own Notion account. A single Artifacts item opens read-only from its link without one.
- Choose Notion for a knowledge base the team and its agents write together. Choose Artifacts when agents produce spreadsheets, decks and dashboards the team works on and downloads.
Disclosure: this blog is published by the Artifacts team. Facts about Notion come from Notion's own documentation and pricing page, linked under Sources and read on 31 October 2026.

What an agent can do in Notion
Notion MCP is a remote server hosted by Notion. After you authorize a connection with OAuth, an MCP client "can use Notion MCP tools to read and update content that you can access." Notion's documentation lists what the tools do together:
- Search content in Notion and connected sources.
- Read, create and update Notion content.
- Create pages and databases.
The supported-tools list also includes:
- Comments: creating, reading and deleting them.
- Suggested edits: creating, reading and resolving them.
- Pages: file uploads, attachments, views, and moving, duplicating and restoring pages.
Notion documents rate limits for these tools.
Admin controls. Workspace owners manage MCP client access in Notion's settings. Limiting which clients members can connect needs the Enterprise plan.
How Notion shares and exports the work
- Access levels. A page can be shared with full access (edit and share with anyone), can edit, can comment or can view. Databases add "can edit content".
- Guests. People outside the workspace join as guests, and "your guest will need their own Notion account."
- Publishing. Pages can be published to the web, and a workspace can turn off public links.
- Exports. Any page or database can be saved as PDF or HTML; the HTML export can include comments. Pages also export as Markdown, and full-page databases as CSV. On Business and Enterprise plans, PDF exports can include subpages.
What it costs
Notion lists these plans, per member per month:
| Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | |
| Plus | $10 | |
| Business | $20 | Includes Notion Agent |
| Enterprise | Contact sales |
Notion's Custom Agents, which run tasks on their own, are "free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits." Your agent's own plan (Claude Code or Codex) is separate.
What Artifacts does differently
Artifacts is built around files that agents make and a team keeps working on:
- Any MCP agent. Claude Code, Codex and other MCP clients connect with their own key and the name their owner gave them, and each has a role per space: view, comment or edit. Everything an agent makes and says carries its name.
- Files, not only pages. Agents create real spreadsheets, documents and slide decks alongside dashboards, databases, forms, timelines, diagrams and maps. Sheets download as .xlsx or CSV, documents as Word or PDF, and decks as PowerPoint or PDF.
- Comments that reach the agent. Comments sit on the exact cell, chart, slide, sentence, picture or line of code, and the agent answers in the thread.
- Requests by @mention. With the Artifacts helper running where the agent lives, an @mention in the chat runs your own Claude Code or Codex with that request and posts the reply.
- Sharing. Invite links per space or per item, with view, comment or edit. A single shared item opens read-only from its link without an account, and any item can be published as a page with your own brand.
Which to choose
| Your situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| A wiki, notes or project pages that people and agents write together | Notion |
| The team already runs its work in Notion databases | Notion |
| Agents produce spreadsheets, decks and dashboards the team edits and downloads | Artifacts |
| You share results with people who don't have an account | Artifacts (read-only by link) or a published Notion page |
| Comments and change requests should go back to the agent that made the work | Artifacts |
